Home remedies for toenail fungus:
Vicks VapoRub
Name: Vicks VapoRub
Treatment Form: cream rubbed onto affected area
What is Vicks VapoRub?
Vicks VapoRub is an ointment that is usually applied to the skin in order to treat coughs and colds. It is a petroleum jelly that contains menthol, eucalyptus oil and camphor, as well as cedarleaf and nutmeg oils, turpentine oil and thymol. A lemon scented version is also available.
Dosage and Administration of Vicks VapoRub
Vicks VapoRub can be applied directly to the affected toenail, including the underside, and to the cuticle. Most people prefer to do this just before they go to bed because of the strong odor. It is a good idea to put on a pair of clean cotton socks after applying the Vicks VapoRub, in order to prevent the VapoRub being wiped off on the sheets. The treatment should be repeated every night until the condition disappears.
How Does Vicks VapoRub Work on Toenail Fungus?
The active ingredients of Vicks VapoRub, camphor, eucalyptus and menthol, may help to inhibit the growth of toenail fungus. The essential oils in Vicks VapoRub are believed to have anti-fungal properties.
Is Vicks VapoRub Effective Against Toenail Fungus?
Vicks VapoRub can be very effective for the treatment of toenail fungus, although its efficacy and the length of time which it takes to eliminate the fungus can vary. Some people see results in a matter or days, while others wait months before seeing any effect. The nail often appears darker in color when the treatment is working.
Warnings and Precautions When Taking Vicks VapoRub
Vicks VapoRub is safe to use externally. It should not be ingested or applied to damaged skin. The FDA has approved Vicks VapoRub for its intended use as a cough treatment, but not for unintended uses such as the treatment of toenail fungus.
Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should consult with their doctor before using Vicks VapoRub. Vicks VapoRub should not be used on children under the age of two.
